APPEAL POLICY

All students are responsible for reviewing, understanding, and adhering to winter session policies and deadlines, as well as university regulations, procedures, and requirements.

  • Students who registered for a winter session 2025 course offered by one of the following Rutgers University-Newark schools are eligible to submit an appeal:
    •  School of Arts & Sciences-Newark
    •  Criminal Justice
    •  Public Affairs & Administration
    •  Rutgers Business School (Undergraduate) 

  • Students may submit an appeal if they experienced extenuating, documented circumstances that were beyond their control and prevented them from formally canceling their course registration or withdrawing within the published deadline. 

    Reasons that are not considered extenuating circumstances include, but are not limited to the following:
    •  Dislike of the course or instructor
    •  Low or failing grade
    •  Course difficulty
    •  Pre-existing medical condition
    •  Lack of awareness of winter session deadlines and policies 
     

  • Appeals must be accompanied by documentation.  It is presumed that each appeal is unique, therefore your supporting documentation must directly relate to your extenuating circumstance. 

  • Appeal decisions are generally made within 5 business days of receiving the appeal.  An appeal decision may be delayed if the appeal is incomplete or lacks documentation.  Decisions are final.

     

  • LAW SCHOOL AND GRADUATE BUSINESS SCHOOL COURSES
    Students who registered in a winter session course offered by the Law School or the Graduate Business School are ineligible.  Contact your academic support or advisement office to speak to someone about your course registration. 

    NJ TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS     
    Students who registered for winter session courses as participants in the NJ Tuition Waiver Program are ineligible.  Any appeals of university decisions regarding the program must be filed within ten (10) days with the Director, Division of Workforce Field Operation, Department of Labor & Workforce Development, 1 John Fitch Plaza, PO Box 055, Trenton, NJ 08625.  The full Rutgers University Tuition Waiver Policy is available here.

     

  • All forms must be submitted by March 31, 2025, and should contain the requisite information and documentation. Please ensure the selection of the appropriate form aligns with the registration exception being appealed (refer to "Grounds for Appeal").  To begin a form: 
    1.  Log in to the application portal.
    2.  Locate the form under Available Applications.
    3 Click Apply.  
    4.  Fill in your information and click Continue
    5.  Review the form and "Terms & Conditions", electronically sign the form, and click Submit.  Please note that you may edit a form after it's submitted.

    Forms will become available after the published registration deadlines.
